FredGrams: A History Of Halloween

The origins of Halloween go back 2000 years to pagan observances (Samhain) throughout the British Isles. These ancient agrarians,  intimately attuned to the change of seasons, felt that the transition between fall and winter in late October was the closest both the dead and the living might be, that moment on the calendar when spirits of both this world and The Other stalked the earth freely…and merged. Later Christian theology would carry this notion of departed spirits forth to deem November 1 as the day on which All Hallowed Saints would be honored. Thus, All Hallows Day(November 1), the night  before(October 31) being All Hallows Eve: Halloween.

Halloween rituals and symbolism such as witches, goblins, jack-o-lanterns, even trick or treating have their roots in the very distant past, adding to the sense of mystery & fascination that the lost, ancient world evokes.

Spooky songs and scenarios abound in our imaginations and are expressed in an imaginative variety of ways among the vintage Halloween offerings at FREDGRAMS. As in ancient times, there is no other moment of the year when we are more tempted to indulge in the supernatural, the unseen, the mysterious, even the terrifying…all the while having a marvelous time.
